10. LIFECASTING

LIFECASTING is the process of creating a 3-dimensional copy of a live model through mold making and casting techniques. Small portions of the figure are more common than full body casts, these portions are often paired  with mixed media in order to finalize a sculptural work. Related in some ways to figure sculpture rendered in clay or stone, life casting has the ability to create a high level of realism; it is possible to capture pores, fingerprints, wrinkles and so on. Lifecasting need not exhibit a high level of realism in the final work if the artist wishes to create a more simple or textured version of the figure as seen in the work of Kiki Smith.

Tips:
-I recommend Smooth-On Alga-Safe alginate with cool or room temperature water for an extended working time
-Keep in mind that alginate molds are a one time use and must be used within 1-2 hours of the creation of the mold
-A life casting DVD comes with the Alga-Safe Life Casting Starter Kit
-Smooth-On Body Double silicone can be used to cast multiples however the pot life is very short. Get the Standard Set type, make small batches and have a few helpers on hand.
-When fabricating the cast you may want to consider building up thin layers of tinted epoxy, silicone, or wax to create a life-like effect. Hairs may be inserted if desired.
-See mold making and casting page for more info on common materials needed
